Hurricane Facts

  Hurricane Katrina is the most costly hurricane in U.S. history at 75 billion dollars.  
  Hurricane Katrina killed at least 1,836 people, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the Okeechobee Hurricane in 1928.  
  To be a hurricanes the winds must be at least 74 miles per hour.  
  The terms hurricane and typhoon are both other names for a strong tropical cyclones.  
  A hurricane is the worlds greatest storm.  
  The word hurricane comes from the word Huracan, the god of big winds and evil spirits that was once worshiped by the Maya people.  
The official hurricane season in the Atlantic is between June 1 and November 30.  
  There are  six to eight hurricanes in an average season.  
  Most hurricanes occur in August, September, and October.  
  The average life of a hurricane is  9 days.  
  The first 12 hours the hurricane are onshore are the most destructive time of the hurricane.  
  A typical eye of a hurricane is about 20 miles across.
